Happy 1 Year of Homeownership

I have officially been a homeowner for 1 year, and my fridge has officially been broken for 1 week! Wooohoo!

They always say your twenties is when you feel invincible and that the world is endless with possibilities and yes that may be true, but sometimes it’s a time when you have never felt so small, so young, and so not ready for what the world has for you. You’re growing up with everyone watching and you have no clue what is happening. Then cue in homeownership.

Oh, homeownership. Despite its cute pictures and what you see on social media, it is NOT always glamorous.

Here is what homeownership IS:

Homeownership is empowering. Did you know that women weren’t allowed to own property in the United States until the mid-to late 1800’s. Oh, if I could go back and tell the gals that one day you could own your own house and have to fix your own fridge, I totally would.

Homeownership is humbling. You have to be okay with asking for help. All of sudden, you realize that you can’t hang your own mailbox, can’t find the fuse box, don’t know who to call when your house floods, don’t know where to put your food when your fridge breaks.

Homeownership is smart. You’re putting money towards your own equity rather than someone else’s. That’s money in the bank building up for you, and allows you freedom in the future: to sell, to lease, to write off on your taxes, to use for your business, etc.

If I could give you any advice before you jump into owning your home it’s this: who you work with MATTERS. Why? Because I’ve called them 17372818 times since I moved in with random homeownership questions. Thank you to my real estate agent, mortgage broker, and home warranty specialist, you’ve officially become the maintenance guy who used to help me figure out how to get my hairbrush out of my drawer at my old apartment.

Ultimately though? homeownership has been totally worth it. It is so wonderful having a place to call and care for as my own. I am really grateful for everything my little home teaches me.

Here’s to adulting and owning homes.
